About Direct Speech Language Therapy
What does direct therapy look like?
Direct therapy is the traditional approach to speech-language therapy
It may be called: speech therapy, language therapy, traditional speech-language therapy, speech-language treatment, or any other combination of these terms
Direct therapy starts with a review of records and a speech and/or language evaluation with a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP)
A detailed case history including previous records is important for your child to receive the best possible care
Evaluations typically take around one hour to complete in person or via telehealth
After evaluation takes place, the SLP will write a detailed report explaining the child’s strengths and areas of concern
The SLP will review the detailed evaluation results with the caregiver at a later date
If the SLP and caregiver agree that direct therapy is needed, we will work together to develop meaningful goals
The SLP will recommend a plan of care including frequency (how often) and duration (for how long) of therapy visits, goals, and growth indicators.
Therapy visits will continue virtually, in person, or as a hybrid model, until goals are reached
In some cases, direct services may be delivered at your child’s daycare
